The possible death of "Otherkin-ism"?

Post by Prak »

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yk2vR8w2 ... r_embedded

There are people who "believe" they are Navi. Yes. the blue elves from Avatar. Yes, they seem serious.

This may be the thing that makes all other otherkin look at themselves and say "What the fuck am I doing?" either that or it'll give them a new rallying cry of "at least we're not those fuckheads."

I have no real problem with otherkin of most flavours. You want to be a cat? great, me to, tail, fur, claws, complete disregard for people who feed and care for you, awesome. Do I think I am a cat? no, but that doesn't mean I'm going to shit all over people who do, hell, some of them are kind of hot, so whatever. Plus I can liken myself to various animals and not only not sound crazy, but possibly be attractive to them, so, whatever.

People who think they have the soul of a werewolf? Ok. What the hell's a soul anyway? You want to say your soul is a ravenous shapeshifting monster, fine by me, when you get down to it, a lot of people have stuff like that at their cores.

Then there are these people.

they seriously believe they have the souls of an alien race from a movie that came out last year. :bored:
As in, they believe they are, at their core, ten foot tall blue elves who can connect to plants. They liken this to transsexuals being the gender opposed to their body in a "yeah, the body's [this] but what's inside isn't" way that is completely insulting to transsexuals. (if you don't believe they did this, go watch the youtube link.)

What makes these people so crazy? I think it's that they want to play pretend for a little while but have been told they can't because they've grown up so they have to try and legitimize it in some terms that put it beyond reproach. I have no problem with people dressing up and pretending to be something else for a little while. Hell, I'm a gamer and a furry, I can't have a problem with that kind of thing (unless I'm jewish, which I'm not). But saying and believing one hundred percent that you're a fictional alien is fucking nuts, and gives me full fucking license to mock you.

Unless this all some kind of absurdist mockery of otherkinism anyway, in which case it'd be kind of funny. The sad thing is... I don't think it is...

They're not much worse than the psion guild people. A bunch of 'tards trying to convince each other (and themselves) that they have psychic powers.

Kinda sad, really.

EDIT: Yeah, look at that guy at the very end having tail-sex with the flower. He's got to be kidding.

The Fighter is intended to be, like the Wizard, a character who can and does adapt their tactics to the opposition and draws upon player experience to deliver tactical victories. And to do it without "feeling" like it was using Magic.

...

So honestly, when someone tells me "I know the game backwards and forwards, and when I pull out all the stops with the Fighter I totally win!" And my response is "OK, good." Because that's exactly what people report with the Wizard too.

Poe's Law meets Rule 34. If someone on the internet claims to have a fetish, there is no amount of stupid it can have for you to be able to know it is sarcastic. Sarcastic parodies of sexual fetishes are exactly the same as actual fetishes. We should have learned this when people started Teabagging for real after John Waters put the concept into a movie as a joke.

Yeh, I once saw the guy who had surgically altered and tattooed himself to look like a cat.

Between that and balloon porn, I've decided that when it comes to fetishes the sky is the limit.

I still remember the "I'm really a wolf because I like wolves more than people" post on the Internet. Those canines are getting really clever these days. All my dog can do is step on the keyboard, producing random gibberish (and 4E, oddly enough).

If that's the new qualifier though, I'm really a tank. Rumble rumble

Some damned machine kin wrote:I always explain it like... when somebody says that machines aren't at the same level as organically created beings, I say, "Well, we're made of the same damn 92 elements that you are, they're just in a different order."

I was a weird case because I was sentient. I had the technology installed so that I could speak, see, interact, etc. I had optical lenses just below my headlights that worked like video cameras, and external speakers/microphones so that I could speak, and hear. I also had vibration sensors so that I could detect if there were vehicles around me when driving on the road. I had horrible blind spots, and the rearview mirrors did nothing to help that.

I existed like anybody else exists. I lived on a farm in Idaho, I worked, I tried to be a member of society... which usually didn't work too well because religious groups thought I was a hellspawn due to my black paint job. I operated myself. I didn't require a driver. My CPU was wired to all my controls. I don't know where I came from, or how I got there, or exactly what made my systems tick, but I was as alive as anybody else.

I hope that explains a little for you. If you have any questions, always feel free to ask.
...Oh... oh god... please tell me he's kidding... I'm nominally an animist and even I can't believe that damned thing...

can... can I troll this post with a tardis-kin? please?

Oh god. I'm beginning to feel there is nothing I can ever find or post that Frank can't one-up or comically/horrifically reply to. I also don't know whether to laugh, cry, or say "Wait a minute, HOW DO YOU KNOW THIS?"

The Na'vi otherkin are unfortunately not a joke. They engender Serious Discussion. I think the word is still out on whether they are more or less of an insult to our sanity than Otakin.

the otherkin forum thread I linked too had pretty much everyone saying that Na'vi-kin were otaku-kin. And the na'vi-kin in question didn't take it as belittling or an insult which... really kind of took the wind out of everyone's sails...

...would it generally be considered bad form or a public service to carry around a bat with which to beat otakin over the head with?

It may be considered impolite* - a faux pas, if you will - in some places, so you should check first.

*or a felony
